Boaters Swap Meet put on by Sanford Lake Association, May 18, 2013 – 9a.m. – 3p.m. next to Pine View Market on River Road. You can; sell items, donate them to SLA and/or shop. If you are selling items show up early to set up your things. Bring a table if you need one, we won’t have any set ups & clearly label your things. Large items boats, etc. also welcome. It is almost time for the 12th Annual Sanford Lake Association Musical Fireworks.
If we reach our $10,000 goal the fireworks will be simulcast on radio station FM107.6 for a distance of one mile from the launch site, so turn on you radios and tune in!

Thursday July 4th, 2013 at 10:00 P.M.
(the rain date is Friday, July 5th).

The fireworks are solely funded through donations.

Ice Shanties

Per the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, overnight ice shanties must be removed by midnight on March 15.

Guest Speaker for Feb. 18, 2013 Sanford Lake Association Board of Directors meeting

The next SLA Board of Directors meeting will take place on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013. It will start at 7:00pm and be held in the VILLAGE OF SANFORD offices located at 352 W Center St. Sanford, Michigan.

Paul J. Hausler, C.N.S.P., Senior Water Resources Specialist at Progressive AE will be the guest speaker. Progressive is the consultancy retained by SLIB (as required by statute) to help the SLIB manage the weed control program for the southern part of the lake. The weed issues and control process will be the subject of his talk.

Current Members are invited to attend. If you are not a member you may renew or join prior to the meeting.

See our previous post about ice safety. With the up and down temperatures be cautious on the ice, especially around the original river as the water underneath is moving and the ice tends to be thin.

As ice begins to form on the lake it is time to remind everyone about good safety practices. This is from one of our Directors, Joe Manelis.

Cold Water Can Kill
Cold water can present a lethal threat… and many don’t have any appreciation of this…

“Rules of 50”:
A 50-year-old person has a 50-50 chance of surviving 50 minutes in 50-degree water.
This means a typical adult has a 50% chance of surviving a 50 yard swim in 50 degree water. Very cold water takes away body heat 37 times faster than air at the same temperature….

When there is ice present, if you don’t get out of the cold water immediately by use of a ladder within only a couple of minutes… you won’t have the strength to climb out of the water if someone comes out to help you who does have a ladder.

Annual Winter Draw-Down

Per Lee Mueller of Boyce Hydro, “This season we intended to start the winter draw down at the beginning of December, and have DNR permission to do so. However, certain factors, including the recent rains, have slowed the draw down slightly, but it is now in progress. The full three feet of lowered lake level is the intended target by mid January.”

Congratulations are in order to newly elected SLA board members, Jeanette Snyder and Steve Tuttle. Congratulations also go to Joe Manelis, past board member who was elected and to Ellen Peden and Sharron Such who are current board members that were reelected. We, as well as the remaining board members (Adam Beebe, Bill Gebo, Beth Jorgensen, Scott Scarpelli, Rob Vallentine and Lee Walko) are open to your suggestions and concerns. Our next board meeting will be Tuesday, November 27 at 7:00 p.m. and the meetings are held at the Village of Sanford office. Please attend if your schedule permits or contact one of the board members to share your ideas
